James Abercromby, 1st Baron Dunfermline
James Abercromby, 1st Baron Dunfermline (born November 7, 1776 in Tullibody , Scotland , † April 17, 1858 in Colinton House , Midlothian ) was a British lawyer and politician.
Life
James Abercromby was the third of four sons of General Sir Ralph Abercromby , who died on March 28, 1801 at the Battle of Alexandria. He attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh and was admitted to the bar in 1800. In 1827 he was approved as a judge.
On June 14, 1802, he married Mary Anne, daughter of Egerton Leigh, Esq., Of West Hall, in High Legh. Their son was Ralph Abercromby, born in 1803 , 2nd Baron Dunfermline .
In 1807 James Abercromby came to the House of Commons for Midhurst , where he joined the Whigs . In 1834 he was mint master (Master of the Mint) of the Royal Mint and a member of the first Melbourne Ministry .
On February 19, 1835 he was the successor to Charles Manners-Sutton Speaker ( Speaker ) of the House of Commons. After resigning from this office in May 1839, he was appointed Baron Dunfermline (June 7, 1839) and entered the House of Lords . He was succeeded as Speaker of the House of Commons by Charles Shaw-Lefevre .
Since 1831 he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1836 he was made an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , in 1841 he became dean of the University of Glasgow.
