Under drowsiness means the lightest form of quantitative disturbance of consciousness .
In medicine, the term quantitative disturbance of consciousness refers to the degree of wakefulness ( vigilance ). In the case of drowsiness, the clarity of consciousness is retained, but affected persons react to their environment with delay, thinking and acting are slowed down and the absorption and processing of information may also be restricted. Retention , orientation and judgment are reduced. Word formation disorders occur.
In quantitatively more severe forms of disturbance of the consciousness one speaks of somnolence (slight clouding of consciousness), sopor and coma .
In contrast to this, qualitative disturbance of consciousness means conditions such as narrowing and shifting of consciousness.
causes
Drowsiness can be the symptom of various health disorders. The causes include a traumatic brain injury , inflammatory diseases of the brain, poisoning from central depressant drugs, alcohol or other drugs, sleep deprivation or metabolic problems, e.g. B. in diabetes mellitus , in question. Accordingly, treatment must focus on eliminating the underlying disorder.
