history

The Bannmühle was a water- powered grain mill at the southern foot of the Beyenberg in the Beyenburger Wupperschleife , in which there was a small freedom next to the Steinhaus monastery, which was built from 1304 and the ducal residence Burg Beyenburg, first mentioned in 1339 .

With the exception of the monastery, the Beyenburg residents and the farmers of the surrounding farms in the Beyenburg district were obliged (banned) to have their grain ground in this mill. The fees went to the Bergische sovereigns or the respective pledgee of the office. In 1601, the pawnman and Beyenburg bailiff, Simon von Lippe, leased the Bannmühle to Henrich Nutzgen for twelve years; the rent was 240 Reichstaler per year . At the beginning of the 19th century, during the French occupation, the mill ban was lifted and the mill became the property of Richard Moll. He operated a fruit mill there with two grinding cycles and also used the water wheel to drive a fulling machine .

In 1858 the mill was converted into a small textile factory by Johann Daniel Oelbermann, and a steam engine moved into the building. At the end of the 19th century the mill stood empty and, after being used in the meantime, burned down with the operation of a luster machine for iron yarn . The building was rebuilt and used the Braun & Blechmann company to manufacture irons and bicycle forks . After discontinuing production, the mill was used as a horse stable and was demolished in 1935.

Today there is no longer any trace of the structure; there is now a children's playground on the site. The upper and lower trenches of the watermill have been filled in and only the streets of the same name remind of its course.
