A district branch was the official name of an administrative unit in the German colonies .

A district branch was subordinate to a district . It roughly corresponded to the seat of a district administration , a district to the seat of a regional council . In most of the district branches - depending on the size of the district branch - there were one to two (German) higher administrative officials and one to two (German) officers of the protection force , as well as a staff of local administrative employees and soldiers (who in the African colonies mostly also had police duties fulfilled, the so-called Askaris ). The district branches in the African colonies were usually housed in a so-called boma .

In 1912 there were 14 district branches in German East Africa and three district branches in German West Africa (here called secondary station and district office ).
