Bhikkhu Analayo
Bhikkhu Anālayo is a Buddhist monk ( bhikkhu ), scholar and meditation teacher. He was born in Germany in 1962 and became a monk ( Pabbajja ) in Sri Lanka in 1995 . He is engaged in comparative studies of the early Buddhist texts of different traditions.
Life
Monastic life
Bhikkhu Anālayo was provisionally ordained in Thailand in 1990 , after a period of meditation in Wat Suan Mokkh , the monastery of the monk Ajahn Buddhadasa . In 1994 he went to Sri Lanka, where in 1995 he renewed his vows (pabbajja) under Balangoda Ananda Maitreya Thero . He received his ordination ( upasampada ) in 2007 in the Shwegyin Nikaya Order (part of the Amarapura Nikaya ). Pemasiri Thera from Sumathipala Aranya was his Acharya and Bhikkhu Bodhi was his main teacher.
Research and Teaching
Bhikkhu Anālayo wrote a doctoral thesis on the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta at the University of Peradeniya ( Sinhala පේරාදෙණිය විශ්ව විද්යාලය ) in 2000 . This was later published as Satipaṭṭhāna, the Direct Path to Realization . During his research on this text, he discovered interesting differences between the text in the Pali canon and in the Chinese Buddhist canon . This discovery led him to a habilitation at the University of Marburg , which he completed in 2007. In it he compared the discussions of the Majjhima-NikAya with the Chinese, Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit and Kanjur and Tanjur (Tibetan Buddhist) counterparts. In 2013, Anālayo published the Perspectives on Satipaṭṭhāna , in which, building on his earlier work, he examines the parallel versions of the Satipaṭṭhāna-sutta and illuminates the meditative perspectives that arise from it when they are taken seriously as instructions for meditation.
In addition, Bhikkhu Anālayo made numerous publications on early Buddhism. He is currently the editor and one of the translators of the first English translation of the Chinese Madhyama-āgama (Taishō 26), and has produced an integral English translation of the Chinese Saṃyukta-āgama (Taishō 99), parallel to the Pali Saṃyutta Nikāya .
However, the focus of Anālayo's academic work remains theoretical and practical aspects of meditation. He has also authored several articles on Inner Sight and Absorption Meditation and compared current meditation practice with the traditions of the sources.
In the comparative studies of the early Buddhist texts, the historical development of the Bodhisattva ideal comes up again and again , as well as the origins of Abhidharma .
Anālayo was also one of the speakers at the International Congress on Buddhist Women's Role in the Sangha, where he explained the position on bhikkhunis (nuns) in early Buddhist texts and shed light on the history of the founding of women's orders. He is a proponent of bhikkhuni ordination, which is controversial in Theravada and the Tibetan tradition.
Anālayo is now professor at the Center for Buddhist Studies at the University of Hamburg , co-founder of the Āgama Research Group and main staff member of the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies
