Bhikkhu Bodhi

Bhikkhu Bodhi (* 1944 in New York as Jeffrey Block ) is an American theravada - Buddhist monk who ordained in Sri Lanka . He is the second president of the Buddhist Publication Society and is the author and editor of many publications in the field of Theravada Buddhism, including new translations of the Suttapitaka in English.

Life

Bhikkhu Bodhi was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1944 and studied philosophy at Brooklyn College in the 1960s. He received his BA in 1966 and a Ph.D. in 1972 from Claremont Graduate School. (Doctor of Philosophy) PhD. In the same year he traveled to Sri Lanka, where he met one of the country's leading monastic scholars , Balangoda Ananda Maitreya , and was ordained a bhikkhu in 1973 . A year later he met the German monk Nyanaponika Mahathera, who was then president and editor of the Buddhist Publication Society and who moved to his monk hermitage near Kandy, the "Forest Hermitage", in 1975.

In 1984 he became the editor / publisher of English language publications for the Buddhist Publication Society , and in 1988 he also assumed the office of President of Nyanaponika Mahathera.

In 1995 he and Bhikkhu Nanamoli published a complete new translation of the Majjhima Nikaya in English. In May 2000 Bhikkhu Bodhi gave the keynote address at the United Nations on the occasion of the first official Vesakh festival at the UN . In addition, a complete new translation of the Samyutta Nikaya , written by him, was published in the same year . In 2002 he resigned from his position as editor of the Buddhist Publication Society , returned to the United States and taught at Bodhi Monastery (Lafayette, New Jersey). He is currently working on a new translation of the Anguttara Nikaya into English, some of which were already published in an anthology in 2000. He has been President of the United States Buddhist Association since 2013 and lives in the Chaung Yen Monastery.

Bhikkhu Bodhi is the founder of the international aid organization "Buddhist Global Relief".
