The spectacular Biaschina viaduct ( Italian viadotto della Biaschina ) is part of the A2 motorway near Giornico in the canton of Ticino , Switzerland .

The viaduct is located between the connections Faido and Biasca and spans the Biaschina Gorge with the Ticino River north of Giornico in the Media Leventina . It connects the San Pellegrino slope viaduct with the double-tube Biaschina tunnel. At 110 meters above the valley floor, the viaduct is the second-highest bridge structure on the Swiss national roads after the Pont sur la Mentue .

facts and figures

  • Construction time: 1979–1983
  • Costs (estimate): 30 million CHF (1979)
  • Total length: 645 m
  • Width: 12.15 + 13.90 m
  • Height: 100 m
  • Spans on the valley side: 58 - 85 - 140 - 160 - 140 - 62 m
  • Spans on the mountain side: 78 - 140 - 160 - 140 - 62 m
  • Pillar dimensions: foot: 8.5 × 10 m / head: 5.5 × 7 m
  • Cross-section heights: bay: 7.15 m / column: 9.52 m
  • Vehicles per day: approx. 20,000

The bridge cross-section is a haunched box girder and was created from prestressed concrete in a cantilever . The box girder piers are made of reinforced concrete and have a radial upward tightening. One group of pillars has a deep foundation with 40 piles Ø150 cm, while the other pillars are flat. There is a speed limit of 100 km / h on the bridge.

As spectacular as the viaduct may appear from below, the crossing is just as unspectacular. It is hardly noticed by travelers and can usually only be recognized by the slanting safety nets. Train travelers on the Gotthard line , on the other hand, see the viaduct several times, as the trains in this area go through several spiral tunnels ( Biaschina loops ).
