Part 1: The letter book

After a holiday together, the children Berit, who lives in Fjærland , and their cousin Nils, who lives in Oslo , decide to keep in touch by writing their experiences in a book and sending it back and forth. This book forms the first part. Bibliographer Bibbi Bokken appears right at the start and donates part of the purchase price for the book. Berit then secretly reads a letter addressed to Bibbi Bokken in which the writer claims that she had seen a book in an antiquarian bookshop in Rome that was only published in Oslo next year and that had the words "magical library" in the title . The children are now trying to solve the mystery of this book and the library. They are followed by a man they call Smiley. Nils just met him when he was on a vacation trip to the second-hand bookshop in Rome mentioned in the letter. The children fear that they may be the target of an anti-conspiracy involving Bibbi Bokken, Smiley and others. After various unsuccessful attempts, Smiley succeeds in stealing the letter book, and he writes a note in it that ends the letter book.

Part 2: The Library

In this part, the children take turns telling the readers what they experienced afterwards. In the further course they manage to get their hands on the letter book again and to reveal the secret of the magical library. You learn from Bibbi Bokken that a publisher is interested in the letter book and wants to publish it next year. But Smiley is still after the book and Berit only uses a trick to thwart his goals. In the end, Bibbi Bokken helps the children as an editor to get the letter book ready for printing.

Others
