The Biblioteca Nacional del Perú ( BNP ) is the Peruvian national library in Lima . It is the oldest and most important library in the country. The library was founded in 1821 by the South American independence fighter José de San Martín (1778-1850). Their original seat was on Avenida Abancay, the current seat in the district of San Borja.

Manuel González Prada (1844–1918) was one of its directors.
