history

Sure news of the existence of such a library goes back to 1437. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the house enjoyed a certain reputation, both for the manuscripts there and for the public readings on theology and for the meetings of the Accademia per le Scienze Ecclesiastiche .

Napoleon , like many others in Venice, had the convent dissolved. The house was converted into a barracks and most of the library holdings were scattered.

A new library was built on the basis of endowments and donations in the mid-19th century after the convent had been re-established. In 1989 the convent became the seat of the Istituto di Studi Ecumenici San Bernardino . Therefore, new collections were created on the topic of ecumenism, but also interdenominational and interreligious dialogue.

In 2001, other holdings came into the library, such as the collection of brother Anacleto Sasso or that of brother Candido Romeri. Added to this were the holdings of dissolved convents, such as that of S. Cuore di Feltre, S. Maria Maggiore di Trieste, SS. Redentore di Verona, S. Michele in Isola , S. Lucia di Vicenza and S. Daniele di Lorigo. The chorales of the Convento di San Francesco del Deserto and of S. Francesco Grande di Padova also found their way into the house.

In 2001 the library was recognized by the directorate of the Beni Culturali della Regione Veneto as "of cultural interest" and therefore part of the Polo Bibliotecario Regionale del Veneto . The manuscripts received entries in the Nuova Biblioteca Manoscritta and in the Catalogo Italiano dei Periodici .
