Biblioteca universale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Biblioteca universale is an encyclopedia by Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718).

The cosmographer and cartographer Vincenzo Maria Coronelli published the Biblioteca Universale Sacro-Profana (short: Biblioteca universale ) in Venice between 1701 and 1706 . It is one of the first encyclopedias in Italian .

The alphabetically structured work was originally designed to be 45 volumes with 300,000 headwords, of which only six (or seven [?], A-Caque) volumes appeared. The letter "A" alone comprised four volumes with almost 2700 terms.

The Biblioteca universale sacro-profana is occasionally mentioned as the first alphabetically sorted encyclopedia (which is incorrect, the Byzantine Suda from the 10th century is already structured in this way), it is also considered to be one of the first forerunners of the conversational lexicons of the 19th century .
