The library of the Von der Heydt Museum is an art library in the administration wing of the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal .

As a scientific working library and information center, it is available to every citizen free of charge and serves in particular art historians, artists, journalists, educators, schoolchildren and students. Lending is not provided in the reference library ; the documents can be viewed on site. Expert staff is available to advise and help.

The book inventory comprises around 100,000 volumes and thus represents the largest art book collection in the Bergisches Land and one of the largest art libraries. The systematic listing according to subject groups is easily accessible; The works can be found quickly via the visitor's PC using an OPAC .

The focus of the collection is in the area of artist monographs with research-relevant catalog raisonnés as well as dissertations and small letters that are difficult to obtain . In addition to the publications of nationally known artists, there are also unpublished materials (" gray literature ") by contemporary or regional artists.

Lexicons and bibliographies as well as comprehensive thematic literature of all genres and epochs of art history can also be found here. Museum guides, inventory catalogs, exhibition books, auction catalogs and magazines are available as additional sources of information along with CDs, DVDs and videos.

The library has databases with over 2,700 Wuppertal artists and all exhibitions in the museum since 1902.

The technical equipment includes copiers and laptop connections.

history

When the Städtisches Museum Elberfeld was founded in 1902, later the Von der Heydt Museum , a reference library was set up to serve the employees of the house. From 1912 the library was open to the public. The library was largely destroyed by war bombs in 1943. After a donation from the art historian and first museum director of the Elberfeld Municipal Museum, Friedrich Fries , who donated his private library to the museum, the library again had a considerable collection in 1952, which was again available to the public in 1960. In 1973, the open access was introduced in the library , after there was previously only a magazine and a reading room. Since 1993 the library has been a member of the Working Group of Special Libraries (ASpB) of the German Library Association .

The inventory had been continuously expanded since 1961, for example in 1992 by taking over 8,000 volumes from the art library of paint company Kurt Herberts and in 2014 by purchasing around 25,000 volumes from Bazon Brock .
