Bieleboh (deity)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bieleboh (also Belobog, Bilobog, Belbog, Bialbog, Byelobog, Bielobog, Belun, Bylun) was the Slavic deity of light and the sun. (The Slavic word biely denotes the color white).

Sacrifices were made to Bieleboh in the form of happy games and banquets.

The memory of Bieleboh lives on in the Belarusian legends about Belun. Belun is an old man with a long white beard, white clothes and a walking stick. It only appears during the day to guide hikers who have lost their way in the dark forest on the path. A Belarusian proverb says: "It is dark in the forest with no belun".

Bieleboh is sometimes equated with the god Svantovit .

The name of the mountain Bieleboh near Bautzen (499 m) is derived from the deity, but is a secondary coinage of the 18th century.
