BigBlueButton is an open-source - Web conferencing system . In addition to various web conferencing services, it has integrations for many of the major learning and content management systems.

Functions

BigBlueButton supports the sharing of multiple audio and video formats, presentations with advanced whiteboard functions - such as pointer, zoom and drawing -, public and private chats, desktop sharing , integrated VoIP with FreeSWITCH and support for the presentation of PDF documents and Microsoft Office documents as well as subordinate online conference rooms (so-called breakout rooms). In addition, users can participate in the conference in one of two roles: as viewers or as moderators.

As a viewer, a user can participate in the voice conference, share his webcam with others, raise his hand and chat with others. As a moderator, a user can mute or unmute others, remove anyone from the session, and make anyone the current moderator. The moderator can upload slides and control the presentation.

architecture

Similar to Apache OpenMeetings , BigBlueButton originally used red5 , an open source implementation of Adobe Media Server , to support real-time collaboration. The clients were previously components based on Adobe Flash , which are still offered in today's version for reasons of downward compatibility.

Today BigBlueButton uses HTML5 and WebRTC for audio, video and screen sharing , which are built into most browsers. The installation of browser plugins is no longer necessary.

Meetings, participants and other relevant information are managed internally as key-value data with the redis database.

A stress test with 47 participants gave a good result.

distribution

BigBlueButton is hosted in Germany by the education ministries of several federal states on their own servers and used for their schools. Several universities and colleges use the software for their courses, especially through the simple integration into learning platforms such as Moodle , ILIAS , Stud.IP or OpenOLAT .

The ARD-ZDF media academy uses BigBlueButton on its learning platform. It is also used for educational purposes in Myanmar and other countries.

privacy

The video and web conference system can be operated on its own servers so that compliance with data protection is verifiable. The data transmission is encrypted ( SRTP ). If a conference is recorded using the integrated function, this can be seen for every participant. Such recordings can then be downloaded via a link.
