The Big Thicket National Preserve is a national preserve in the southeast of the US state Texas , near the city of Beaumont . The reserve is located in the flat Gulf Coast Plain . During the Cretaceous the area was covered by the Western Interior Seaway .
history
It was on 11 October 1974 together with the Big Cypress National Preserve founded one of the first in the US and is since 1981 UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve . In 1993 the reserve was expanded and since July 26, 2001 it has been a Globally Important Bird Area . Another expansion took place in 2009.
Flora Fauna
The protected area has a very high biodiversity . Although there are more than 100 different tree and shrub species, the forests are dominated by the swamp pine . There are also more than 1000 species of flowers and ferns, including orchids and carnivorous plants .
In addition to 300 different bird species, there are also various reptile species, such as B. Venomous snakes and alligators .
