National Preserve
National Preserves are areas in the United States that have been designated as nature reserves by Congress . They are mostly administered by the National Park Service . Exceptions are the Valles Caldera National Preserve under the administration of the United States Forest Service and the Preserve portion of Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve of the Bureau of Land Management .
The preserves are similar to the national parks in terms of their protection status , but in contrast to these, mining, the extraction of crude oil / gas and mostly hunting and trapping are permitted.
Examples of National Preserves are:
- The Bering Land Bridge National Preserve in Alaska, which protects the remains of Beringia , a land bridge between North America and Asia that existed during the Pleistocene Ice Age .
- The Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve , a protected area on the Yukon with paleontological and archaeological sites.
Extensions of protected areas with a higher protection status were designated as Preserves several times in order to be able to continue the existing uses (especially hunting) in them. Examples are Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve in Idaho or the Katmai National Park & Preserve in Alaska .
