The Biker Union eV is an association with the aim of representing the interests of motorcyclists in Germany . The association's headquarters are in Königstein im Taunus . The Biker Union currently has almost 4,000 members across Germany, organized in 15 regional offices and 60 BU round tables.

history

The immediate reason for the foundation in 1986 was a discriminatory poster by the interior ministers of the federal states , on which rockers were generalized as a symbol of violence against citizens . On the poster, under the heading “Are you safe from violence?”, Four rockers armed with striking tools were depicted. The founding meeting of the association takes place on the premises of Fips (Günther Brecht), the founder of the Huber Verlag . Initially founded primarily as the mouthpiece of the clubs and for many years mainly seen as the umbrella organization of these, the relationship with the MCs is now divided. At the founding event, there was just one “free biker” for every 1,000 founding members. The relationship changed only slightly, but while many members are still organized in clubs, these often strictly separate club life and club membership. However, 17 club memberships are still active.

After an initial high phase at the end of the 1980s, the club fell into crisis in the 1990s. The expensive annual parties, which are rumored to attract up to 20,000 people, should be financed through a limited company. The magazine BUM was launched for this purpose. But Biker Union Service GmbH had to file for bankruptcy in 1997. The reasons for this were irregularities in the management. In 1998 they merged with other motorcycle associations to form the Motorcycle Initiative Germany (MID). A major event of the international Federation of European Motorcyclists' Association (FEMA) registered as a demonstration , at which 5,500 participants were expected, turned into a financial disaster. In fact, only 2,000 people came, less than half. This almost led to the dissolution of the newly founded initiative, as the costs were transferred to the individual associations. The association, which had to carry a large part of the burden, was about to be dissolved when Rolf Frieling took over the chairmanship and was able to take countermeasures accordingly. The person who worked in civil life as a management consultant with a focus on management consulting and organizational development took care of rebuilding the association.

Since 2004 the association has been supporting the Research Association for Roads and Transport and has helped to create a leaflet on road safety for motorcyclists that has been published several times. Her long-term commitment to road safety in 2013 was awarded first prize in the ideas competition "Safe on Landstraßen" of the campaign " Down from the gas " of the Federal Ministry of Transport and the German Road Safety Council.

Situation today

Right from the start, the association's work has been based on the three pillars of celebrating, driving and political work. As a major event, the BU rally is held every two years, a four-day trip through Germany. In addition, the association organizes round tables. Around sixty are currently being held across Germany. There are also 15 regional offices that serve as a contact point for bikers on site. The regional offices report on their work to the Executive Board at meetings that take place twice a year. The members also receive the association magazine "BU aktiv". The Biker Union works in specialist committees and in legislative processes.

The main areas of work are:

  • Against the improper use of bitumen in road construction
  • Against route closures for motorcyclists only
  • Against a legal obligation to wear standardized protective clothing
  • Against the tightening of the volume limits on motorcycles
  • Against arbitrariness by the authorities against motorcyclists and clubs
  • For the safe design of roads and the roadside space for motorcyclists
  • For simplified registration regulations for motor vehicles
  • For creating motorcycle parking spaces in city centers
  • For attaching underrun protection to crash barriers
