Bilboquet (tool)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The bilboquet ( French ) is a tool with which a gilder applies gold leaf .

use

The tool is flat at the bottom and round at the top so that you can hold it in your hand. The flat side is covered with scarlet fabric. Its shape resembles a stamp with a longer stem. The gilder breathes on the fabric and then picks up the gold strip, which sticks to the fabric due to the low moisture it breathes out. The gold leaf is then cut to size with a specially designed knife - with a wide, thin blade. The bilboquet is used for gilding smooth areas on the edges of which the gold should not protrude. Working with a bilboquet is cleaner and more precise than with the so-called “ starter” or “ pin” brush , which is used for larger-scale work.
