In Germany the so-called Dr. med. dent. not awarded as a professional doctorate. In order to obtain the doctoral degree in dentistry, a recognized doctorate is required, which is stipulated in the respective doctoral regulations of the supervising university. The doctorate includes both a dissertation in normal or publication-based form as well as a disputation (oral examination) to be taken before the examination board. The doctoral grade is derived from these achievements.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, it is only permitted to carry out professional doctorates in the original form, e.g. B. the Austrian Dr.med.dent. , the Czech and Slovak MDDr. or the Dr-medic stom. from Rumania.

Professional doctorates from the countries of the European Economic Area may, however, be conducted without reference to the original form awarded, which corresponds to an indirect designation of origin.
