David Garrick (born February 19, 1717 in Hereford , England , † January 20, 1779 in London ) was one of the most famous English actors of the 18th century . He was particularly successful both as a comedian and in serious roles on the London stages . He also made a name for himself as a theater director and writer of plays. In 1741 he delighted his London audience with his portrayal of Richard III. and thus earned the reputation of being one of the best actors of his time.

The portrait was made in Italy and established Angelika Kauffmann's reputation before she moved to London. After completing the portrait, she sent it to London, where it was exhibited. Since David Garrick was very popular in England, it got a lot of attention.

Angelika Kauffmann has succeeded in giving the portrait great intimacy. David Garrick appears to have briefly interrupted a conversation with others to turn his attention to the viewer. Joshua Reynolds took up the sitter's gesture in his portrait by Francis Abington.
