Bilibili (stylized as bilibili , Chinese  哔 哩 哔 哩 , pinyin bìlībìlī ; nickname B 站 literally "the B-site", NASDAQBILI ) is a video-sharing website that deals with cartoons , comics and games (anime, comic and Games (ACG)) in China. Users can submit, view, and add commentary captions for videos. Bilibili uses an Adobe Flash or HTML5 player that can be manually switched to play user-submitted videos, either hosted by themselves or hosted by third-party sources , with a real-time captioning system for interactive playback.

With the rapidly growing number of visitors to Bilibili, the company decided to expand its functions: in addition to the predominant themes, Bilibili now offers videos from various fields including music, dance, science and technology, entertainment, film, drama, fashion, everyday life and even Commercials . Bilibili also offers a live streaming service where the audience interacts with streamers. Typically it's about cartoons, content creation, game strategies, etc.

In addition to videos, Bilibili also offers games, mainly mobile games related to ACG (animation, comic and games) such as the Chinese version of the Japanese freetoplay smartphone role-playing game Fate / Grand Order.

Inspired by similar video sharing websites Nico Nico Douga and AcFun , Bilibili founder Xu Yi ( Chinese  徐逸 , pinyin xúyì , known as "9bishi" Internet) has a prototype website named after graduating in three days Mikufans.cn and relaunched the website with the name Bilibili on January 24, 2010. Later in 2011, Hangzhou Huandian Technology was established to manage the development and operation of Bilibili. According to Alexa.com , bilibili.com ranks 17th in China and 64th worldwide of the most viewed websites.

history

Bilibili was founded in 2009 by Xu Yi. At the time, Xu Yi was a user of AcFun and wanted to make a better website than AcFun. Within three days he created a prototype website called Mikufans.cn as the fandom community of Hatsune Miku . As it grew, he remodeled the website to specialize in video sharing and launched it on January 14, 2010 under the name Bilibili (bilibili.us), the nickname of protagonist Mikoto Misaka in the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun for they electric superpower. Bilibili also cites many of its features related to this anime, for example giving a user a "coin" as a post, which is the reference to Mikoto Misaka's predilection for using coins to shoot her stream. In addition, Bilibili celebrates the birthday of Mikoto Misaka every May 2nd on its homepage.

In 2011, Bilibili's domain name bilibili.us was canceled due to the enforcement of .us restrictions by the domain registrar . Therefore, on June 25, 2011, Bilibili switched to the domain name bilibili.tv. Afterwards, Xu Yi founded the startup Hangzhou Huandian Technology ( Chinese  幻 电 , Pinyin huàndiàn ) in Hangzhou (Hangzhou), Zhejiang (Zhejiang) for better development and operation of Bilibili.

In April 2012, Bilibili signed an agreement with Nico Nico Douga to exploit the latest Chinese episodes of the newly aired anime Fate / Zero on April 7th. However, this program was censored and stopped after three episodes because it was reported as an unauthorized operation of audio-video broadcasting services on the internet. The operating company Hangzhou Huandian Technology was administratively punished by the local government and fined 10,000 yuan .

In August 2012, Bilibili started displaying logos on its home page to indicate affiliation with the state-owned Shanghai Media Group and to share the use of different licenses from content providers to avoid future legal risks. Meanwhile, anonymous visitors from bilibili.tv have been redirected to a subdomain of the broadband subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group (bilibili.smgbb.cn).

In March 2018, Bilibili filed for an initial public offering of up to $ 4 billion with the Securities and Exchange Commission and planned to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company was listed on the NASDAQ on March 28, 2018 under the symbol BILI . The largest institutional investors include the investment companies Kami Sama Limited (8.8%) and Loyal Valley Capital (5.9%) as well as the two Chinese technology companies Tencent with 13.3% and Alibaba (via Taobao) with 7.2% .
