Bilina (Croatia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bilina is a historical late medieval town in the Bukovica region , west of the town of Knin , southern Croatia .

The place became known as the seat of the aristocratic Drašković family in the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century. Bartol Drašković, the founder of the later aristocratic branch of his family, lived there with his family in a castle or chateau. On February 5, 1525, his first son Juraj ( German Georg ), who later became famous Croatian statesman, bishop and cardinal, was born there. Two of Bartol's younger sons, Gašpar ( Kaspar ) and Ivan I ( Johann ), were probably born there. A little later, because of the growing Ottoman threat, the whole family moved to northwestern Croatia.

A short time later the storming Ottomans conquered the whole area around Bilina, or North Dalmatia , and the Drašković of Bilina later became Drašković of Trakošćan .
