The Trakošćan Castle is located in the Bednja municipality in the Varaždin County in the far north of Croatia , near the Slovenian border. With 40,000 visitors annually, it is one of the most visited castles in the country.

history

Trakošćan was built in the 13th century.

From 1584, when Maximilian II donated the estate to Juraj Drašković von Trakošćan , until it was expropriated after the communist seizure of power, the castle was owned by the aristocratic Drašković family .

The castle got its present appearance in the 19th century.

tourism

Today the Trakošćan Castle is owned by the state and mainly serves as a museum and excursion destination. At the foot of the castle there is a lake and a park . The lake was artificially created in the Middle Ages and still exists today. It is rich in fish and other aquatic animals. So the lake also became a meeting point for anglers from the nearer and more distant regions.

As an attraction there is a pedal boat rental and a floating snack island. There is also a hiking trail around the lake. A hike around the lake takes about 2-3 hours.
