Howard William Backus , called Billy Backus , (born March 5, 1943 in Canastota , USA) is a former welterweight boxing champion . He is the nephew of Carmen Basilio .
Major fights
On December 3, 1970 Billy Backus won the WBA and WBC welterweight belts against José Ángel Nápoles , the fight ended in the 4th round by technical knockout. On January 23, 1971, he defended his title against Bobby Williams . Backus won on points, over 10 rounds.
On March 15, 1971, he managed his second title defense against Robert Gallois , the fight went over the full 10 rounds. In his third defense of the title, on June 4, 1971, he had to admit defeat José Ángel Nápoles . The fight was canceled in the eighth round.
Backus played his last fight on May 20, 1978 against the then WBA world champion Pipino Cuevas , but he lost in the second round by TKO.
