Biltmore Conference

The Biltmore Conference was held from 9. May bis 11. May 1942 in New York City in the State of New York in the Biltmore Hotel instead. The conference was announced as an extraordinary Zionist congress, as no Zionist congress could take place this year due to the war events.

Mainly it was about the demand for an opening of Palestine for the refugees from the Europe occupied by the National Socialists . The conference, chaired by David Ben-Gurion , determined that British-controlled Palestine should become Jewish property. This alarmed some American liberal Jews who, in late 1942, formed an anti-Zionist organization called The American Council for Judaism.

One of the participants in the conference was Hannah Arendt , who in the following years campaigned for a binational state in Palestine consisting of Jews and Arabs.
