Binioù kozh

The Binioù is a Breton bagpipe . There are two types.

On the one hand the Binioù kozh ( Breton : "old bagpipes"), also known as Binioù bihan (small bagpipes). It is tuned about an octave higher than the Great Highland Bagpipes and sounds piercing thanks to the pipes with a narrow scale, but without being shrill (at least with good instruments and players). It consists of a drone and a melody pipe. The latter has seven finger holes in the front and comprises about ten tones, with overblowing from the octave . The drone pipe is tuned two octaves lower than the tonic of the melody pipe. Traditionally, the binioù kozh is played in a duet with the bombarde , which usually plays the same melody an octave lower.

In addition, the Great Highland Bagpipe has found its way into Breton music as Binioù bras (Breton: "big bagpipe") since the 1930s and increasingly supplanted the Binioù kozh.
