BIOD is a Dutch brand of caravans and a company in Hengelo . From 1960 to 2017, caravans with a hull made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) were manufactured from one part under the brand name BIOD . Caravans with such a construction usually have strong roundings on all corners and edges. BIOD caravans are often used as a touring caravan. The limited width of many models, the rounded shape and the resulting favorable aerodynamics play a role here.

history

BIOD was originally an equipment factory, founded in 1947 by Teunis van Maaren (January 26, 1909, Dordrecht - May 27, 1990, Hengelo ( Overijssel )). BIOD manufactured precision stainless steel products for the textile and chemical industries in the 1940s and 1950s. BIOD has been building tent trailers and car trailers since 1958 .

In 1959, BIOD presented itself at a travel / camping fair in Essen . Van Maaren met Franz Maly here, who showed him his caravan "Wiesel". Van Maaren was fascinated by the aerodynamic design and the durable material of the seamless hull made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Van Maaren acquired the license rights for Europe (with the exception of the then Federal Republic of Germany, Austria and Switzerland). Polyester processing personnel were initially trained by Schneider Holzindustrie OHG in Lindau on Lake Constance. The Schneider company, which in the meantime had taken over the production for Germany from Franz Maly, produced the caravans under the Fahti brand. The ACC-Group BIOD Caravans has been producing the caravans since 2004 , initially in Lunteren and since 2007 in Ede .

Other caravans made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic

Other manufacturers of caravans with a similar hull construction are MKP (made in Denmark from 1961 to 1988), Lander (made in Italy from 1973 to 1984), Intercamp (made in the German Democratic Republic from 1975 to the late 1980s) and Westfalia ( manufactured in the Federal Republic of Germany from the end of the 1950s to the end of the 1990s).
