Folding caravan

A folding caravan is a trailer for motor vehicles from which a tent or complete caravan can be unfolded for camping . When unfolded, the tent remains firmly attached to the trailer. However, folding caravans can also consist entirely of attached, foldable wall surfaces.

Common synonyms are "tent trailer", for example the " Klappfix " (actually Camptourist and sold via the Netherlands under the name Alpenkreuzer ), which was widespread in the GDR , or the Rhön Universal , "folding trailer", "Falter", "folding caravan", also from the GDR. and "Klappi".

Well-known examples are the Esterel and the Rapido models . Other well-known companies are Raclet , Opera , Combi-Camp , Holtkamper , Campwerk , Camp-let , 3Dog , Trigano and Dingo-Tec .

At this point we should also mention caravans with a pop-up roof , such as the Eriba Touring series, a caravan series with low standing height, which can be extended to normal standing height by raising the pop-up roof in the area outside the sleeping and seating groups.

Advantages and disadvantages

Compared to normal caravans, folding / folding caravans have a sometimes significantly reduced overall height while driving, therefore offer less air resistance while driving and therefore reduce the fuel consumption of the towing vehicle while driving. The disadvantage is that the caravan cannot usually be fully used for living and sleeping purposes during breaks and rest breaks .
