Rooftents are special tents for automobiles , which are mounted on the roof of a vehicle and transported. The tent construction on the vehicle roof means that you can sleep relatively safely and comfortably above the vehicle. The internal cargo space remains free.

The first rooftop tent for camping was in Western Europe in the 1930s. To transport a roof tent on the vehicle roof, the permissible roof load of a vehicle must be checked in advance for safety reasons.

history

As early as January 1937, the first roof tent was presented in the English-language magazine “Popular Science”. It consisted of a collapsible steel frame that was mounted on the car roof and, when unfolded, was supported by scaffolding in the front area of the car, which also served as an entrance.

The Autohome company has only been manufacturing roof tents for motor vehicles in Rivarolo Mantovano, Italy, since 1958 . In the GDR there was a very simple roof tent for the Trabant since 1976 ; officially named Müller roof tent after the manufacturer (popularly known as Pension Sachsenruh ). There are now a large number of global manufacturers with different solution concepts.

Roof tent types

Today three different roof tent concepts have become established:

  • Folding roof tents : A folding roof tent is opened to the side. The pack size is usually half of the lying area. It can be seen as the original variant of all roof tents.
  • Hard-shell roof tents : In hard-shell roof tents, the lying area is identical to the base area. The shell is screwed on using a crank mechanism or gas pressure springs . They are most like a roof box. The shells are made either from GRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic) or by means of injection molding .
  • Inflatable roof tents : In inflatable roof tents, the base and the tent system are filled with air using an electric pump. The lying area can be many times the packing size. They are the newest concept on the market.

There are also hybrid roof tents , i.e. mixed forms, of the three types mentioned above.
