history

In the vicinity of Schmedehausen, Bronze Age finds can be found dating back to around 1200 BC. Go back BC. But finds from the Roman imperial era also show that there was permanent settlement. The first written document comes from the Saxon period (around 950), when a certain “Jecmari” farm in the “Smithehuson” peasantry became the official court of the Freckenhorst monastery. This smithy will probably also have been the namesake.

Around 1200 Schmedehausen was on the border between the Prince Diocese of Münster and the County of Tecklenburg . The customs station was built in the Eltingmühle house, which still exists today as an inn.

In the Thirty Years' War 1618–1648 Schmedehausen was heavily plundered, as the road was used by troops passing through as well as the connection axis between the negotiating parties in Münster and Osnabrück. In 1707 the county of Tecklenburg became Prussian. During the Napoleonic War of 1802, General Blücher and his troops crossed the border at Schmedehausen to occupy the eastern part of the Duchy of Münster. After the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss Schmedehausen then also became Prussian. The French incorporated Schmedehausen into the Lippe department of France. After the Congress of Vienna , Schmedehausen became part of the Prussian province of Westphalia . After the Second World War, Schmedehausen became part of North Rhine-Westphalia .
