The Klappfix , later called Camptourist , is a relatively flat trailer made in the GDR for camping holidays , from which a living tent can be set up in a few simple steps. The smaller previous series CT4 and CT5 were sometimes called Campifix. The manufacturer was VEB Fahrzeugwerk Olbernhau , which produced the Klappfix from 1964 . After the reunification in 1990 the production of the Klappfix in Olbernhau was stopped.

Many of these caravans are still in use today. Folding caravan trailers are also currently being manufactured by various manufacturers. These modern "folders", which are also approved as trailers for trikes, now have stable side walls. Thanks to their low dead weight, the first types of Klappfix are also suitable for towing vehicles with a low trailer load, such as Trabant or Saporoshez .

A great advantage of the Klappfix, in addition to its low weight, is that it drives like a conventional cargo trailer in the slipstream of the towing vehicle and can therefore also be used inexpensively on longer tours.

The motor vehicle tax in Germany is 7.46 euros (as of 2012) per 200 kg of weight or part thereof, which corresponds to an annual tax burden of around 15 euros.

A forerunner of the foldable living room trailer was manufactured by VEB Alubau und Metallveredlung Wismar at the end of the 1950s .

Models and technical data

The technical data of the individual series partly varied with the year of construction, so that different values can be found in the sources. From 1984 onwards, the many different chassis were replaced by a standard chassis that was identical for all series.

Campifix

The Campifix was built from the mid-1950s and was based on an idea from the 1930s. Initially it consisted mainly of a wooden structure, later years had increasingly more metal and plastic parts. The original variant was significantly heavier than the later models of the 1960s, which gradually became lighter.

The Klappfix 64 was built from 1964. Its construction was asymmetrical; when the lid was opened, it was on the floor, creating a height offset to the other half.

Camptourist 5

Alpenkreuzer Super (CT 5-2)

The Camptourist 5 also has an asymmetrical structure, in which the open cover lies on the floor and thus two different high levels result. Thanks to this construction, the storage spaces are accessible even when the structure is closed. The same applies to the kitchen, which can therefore also be used for resting on the go. The luxury version has an additional rear section made of plastic for additional storage space, which makes it longer. There were different tent variants that offered different numbers of sleeping possibilities. Different chassis variants resulted in different masses and payloads.

Camptourist 6

The Camptourist 6 models are based on a symmetrical structure. This means that the lid with the additional sleeping places is at the same height when the part is set up as the part rests on the hanger and on supports. The kitchen is no longer permanently installed on the trailer and can be swiveled to the side or even set up individually.

Camptourist 7

CT 7 built

The CT 7 had a new folding principle: The usual high cover of the trailer was omitted, instead two flat lying surfaces were folded out from the trailer to the right and left, which rested on supports. When the lying areas were opened, the main tent also automatically unfolded. Only the awning had to be set up separately. The kitchen was again removable and freely positionable.

Camptourist 8

In contrast to the other models, the CT 8 was opened lengthways and was only designed for two people. The lying area was thus above the drawbar. Unlike the other models, the CT 8 was manufactured in Werdau and not in Olbernhau.

Camptourist 9

The CT 9 was made entirely of GRP. With him in 1990 the company was to be saved, but the breakthrough did not succeed and production had to be stopped. A drawbar box was also available for the first time with the CT9. As with the CT 7, the lying surfaces were opened on both sides.
