Leonard Blumenthal

Leonard Mascot Blumenthal (born February 27, 1901 in Athens (Georgia) , † August 11, 1984 ) was an American mathematician who studied geometry.

Blumenthal received his doctorate in 1927 from Johns Hopkins University under Frank Morley (Lagrange Resolvents in Euclidean Geometry). He was a professor at the University of Missouri . Most recently he was Defoe Distinguished Professor Emeritus. For many years he was the head of the mathematics faculty.

From 1933 to 1934 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and from 1934/35 as a National Research Fellow at the University of Vienna , where he attended Karl Menger's Mathematical Colloquium . In 1967 he was Fulbright Professor at the University of Leiden and in 1954/55 at the University of Buenos Aires. In 1963 he became a foreign member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences. 1960 to 1968 he was visiting professor for the Mathematical Association of America . In 1942 he was AMS Symposion Lecturer in Chicago.

Leroy Milton Kelly is one of his PhD students . An endowed professorship at the University of Missouri is named after him and an AMS dissertation award ( Blumenthal Award ) is awarded every four years .
