In Germany, organic boxes have been offered by various regional suppliers since the early 1990s. There are now around 190 providers in Germany who supply private households, kindergartens, schools, companies and restaurants with organically grown food. A large part of the products also comes from the region of the respective company. An association for the marketing of organic boxes under the name Ökokiste was founded in Bavaria in 1996. From there, the association first spread to southern Germany and finally to all of Germany. The term “eco box” is protected by trademark law. The owner of the word mark Ökokiste is the Verband Ökokiste eV It consists of an association of over 40 farmers and direct marketers. In 2014, around 50,000 households were supplied each week. The total turnover of all member companies in 2014 was over 50 million euros. The providers undertake to work according to guidelines set by the association. The country basket GmbH & Co. KG from Rohrlack marketed since 1997 Country Baskets . In 2020 the company had around 2,100 customers. The turnover is around five million euros.

The market for Organic Box - or Vege-Box Schemes , of which there are around 600, is also growing in Great Britain . It is critically noted that the mail order business with organic food has now been partly taken over by wholesalers and is no longer limited to local and seasonal goods.

organization

Organic boxes are usually offered in different types, e.g. B. with a particularly large number of regional or vegetarian products. Customers of the organic box can guarantee the regular purchase of a certain amount of food in a subscription or have the box put together individually. The organic box is organized either by individual organic farms for direct marketing or via the associations. Orders are placed by telephone, fax and often over the Internet. The organic box is particularly suitable for customers who like to buy seasonal goods.
