Biodiversity in communities

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The declaration of biodiversity in municipalities is part of a long-term process to implement the National Strategy on Biological Diversity (NBS). It is organized by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation .

Cities and municipalities in Germany should be motivated to take measures to protect biological diversity in various areas. These areas are: Green and open spaces in the settlement area, species and biotope protection , sustainable use as well as awareness-raising and cooperation.

In Germany, over 70 percent of habitats are considered threatened. In view of the resulting pressure to act, the municipalities have come together in an alliance for biological diversity. In doing so, they want to promote “inter-municipal” exchange, coordinated public relations work and joint projects. The partner is Deutsche Umwelthilfe .

implementation

The project started in February 2010 with around 30 municipalities. Over 19 million people (around 23 percent of the total German population) are represented by the current 200 “declaration municipalities” (August 2011). 43 of around 80 major German cities have signed the declaration.

In large cities, for example, the protection of bats is being promoted.
