Bionx was a Canadian manufacturer of electric drives for bicycles with electric assistance, so-called pedelecs . On February 27, 2018, BionX Canada filed for bankruptcy. Since no buyer was found for the entire company in the bidding process, the court announced the sale of the Canadian production and office equipment to three buyers on June 14, 2018.

history

The company emerged from the company EPS, which offered pedelec drives as early as the 1990s and is therefore one of the first manufacturers. BionX is headquartered in Aurora , Ontario, with the German branch in Haar near Munich . The first products under the name BionX were sold in Canada in 2003, since 2004 BionX has also been present in Europe and supplies dealers in 15 countries. After filing for bankruptcy on February 27, 2018, production in Canada was temporarily suspended and the 80 employees were released until a new buyer was found for the company.

Since the search for an investor was unsuccessful, the bankruptcy estate was sold. In December 2018, BionX Europe also announced that it would soon cease operations after the buyer had signaled to the bankruptcy estate that he was not interested in further cooperation.

technology

The manufacturer exclusively produced gearless rear wheel hub motors, which were initially offered as retrofit kits for converting conventional bicycles, but since 2008 also in complete pedelecs. After nickel-cadmium batteries were initially used, the manufacturer later switched to lithium-ion batteries that are common today . The P-System, which was initially produced, was followed by the D-Series in 2013. This can deliver a higher maximum torque than a P-series drive and is therefore particularly suitable for steep climbs.

As is usual with most rear wheel hub drives , BionX drives have a recuperation brake and are very quiet in operation.
