Biodiversity and Bioprospection

Since the late 1980s there has been an increased interest of pharmaceutical companies and research institutes in plants and indigenous knowledge about them. This could be used to find new active ingredients or to manufacture drugs. Most of the companies come from industrialized countries, while the plants come from developing countries. However, this results in a political and economic-social divide that contributes to the North-South conflict .

The biodiversity is particularly high in the tropics and subtropics , which is why the 17 most species-rich countries are referred to as megadiversity countries . Your biosphere contains around 70% of the world's species. Bioprospecting should therefore note that the search for plant resources does not only concern companies and research institutes, but also the countries of origin of the plants, whose local communities require protection.
