Birštona's Jazz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birštonas Jazz is an international music festival in the Lithuanian spa town of Birštonas . It is the oldest jazz festival in Lithuania. It has been organized since 1980 and takes place every other year on the last weekend in March. More than 20 jazz bands present their performances during the three days. The event earned Birštonas the title of the Lithuanian jazz mecca . It attracts jazz 'pilgrims' from all over Lithuania and other countries. Each time around 3500 fans flock to the city, which has a population of just under 3200. The radio and TV recordings of these festivals are an almost comprehensive documentation of Lithuanian jazz history. As a result of the Birštonas festival, jazz enthusiasts from Vilnius , Kaunas and Klaipėda organize similar festivals in these cities.

Not only mature and well-known Lithuanian jazz players are on the stage in Birštonas, but also their young colleagues.

Grand Prix

Birštonas Jazz Festival has its own Grand Prix, the so-called Lithuanian Jazz ' Oscar ', an award for a remarkable contribution to Lithuanian jazz.
