Liudas Mockūnas (born May 18, 1976 in Panevėžys ) is a Lithuanian jazz and improvisation musician ( saxophone , bass clarinet , clarinet ), composer and music producer , who has also emerged as an interpreter of new music .

Live and act

Mockūnas began his musical education at the age of eight. He studied classical clarinet with A. Doveika at the MK Čiurlionis Art High School in Vilnius and saxophone with Vladimir Chekassin at the Lithuanian Music Academy , where he received his diploma in 2002. Since 1999 he has also studied at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Since 2004 he has been teaching at the chair for jazz at the Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija .

Mockūnas has been performing at European festivals with his former teacher Chekassin since 1988. He played with most of the jazz musicians in Lithuania and in the field of European art music with some Lithuanian symphony orchestras , with the St. Kristoforas Chamber Orchestra and the Gaida Ensemble . In Lithuania Arkady Gotesman is his duo partner, the duo is often expanded to a trio by the Estonian guitarist Jaak Sooaar. In 2000 he founded the Toxikum formation with Stefan Pasborg in Copenhagen . He also played in Andrew Hills Jazzpar Octet and with Mats Eilertsen and Mats Gustafsson ; he was also a member of the Copenhagen Art Ensemble and Pierre Dørges New Jungle Orchestra . In the early 2010s he worked a. a. with Marc Ducret , Ryoji Hojito , Barry Guy and his band Mockuno NuClear . Mockūnas is co-founder of the independent label NoBusiness Records , on which his albums with his own compositions appear. He also wrote film and theater music.

Mockūnas was awarded the Mūzų malūnas music prize in 2004; With Pasbourg he won the European improvisation competition in Poitiers in 2001 and, as a soloist, other international jazz prizes in the Baltic States.
