The Bird Internet routing daemon (short BIRD ) is an open source implementation services of both IPv4 - and IPv6 -enabled TCP / IP - Routing - daemons , originally from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague developed and is now being further developed and financed by CZ.NIC Labs.

BIRD currently supports several internal routing tables , the EGP BGP , the IGPs OSPF and RIP as well as static routes. Furthermore, BIRD can also use the RAdvd implementation to send the router advertisements used in the IPv6 auto-configuration .

In the meantime, BIRD has replaced alternatives such as Quagga as a route server on most European IXPs , including LONAP , DE-CIX , AMS-IX , LINX and ECIX, with a share of 41%, according to the Euro-IX report related, among other things, to the reduced use of resources .

In contrast to similar quagga that has a Telnet - Interface is configured, BIRD is a configuration file set. Changes are reported to the daemon via a HUP signal.

In 2010 the CZ.NIC received the LINX Conspicuous Contribution Award.
