Birgden II is a village in the Lennep district of the Bergisch city of Remscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia . The Roman ordinal number “II” serves to differentiate between two other locations (see Birgden I and Birgden III ) within the city of Remscheid.
Birgden II was an external citizen of Lennep until it was incorporated into Remscheid . Birgden II ("Bergden") was once on the edge of the "Birdener Gemarke", an old German community forest.
Location and description
The small farm is located between the residential areas Greuel and Bökerhöhe near the A1 motorway. Several buildings of a farm have existed here for generations, which today (2017) operates a meat business. The farmhouse was built in 1884 and has been farming there in the fourth generation since then. In the 30s of the last century, an ax that was thousands of years old was found in a field there, suggesting that people were there early.
Natural spaces
A bit downhill there is a fenced meadow pool with very clear water at the edge of the forest, which has an area of about 550 m² and is designated as a natural monument . The Biological Station Mittlere Wupper reports on a "richly structured reed zone and an outstandingly pronounced floating leaf zone".
In this reservoir in the catchment area of the Eschbachtalsperre and in the source area of the Tenter Bach, the quite rare plant species such as shield water crowfoot, frog bite, pond lentil , hook water star, beak sedge and marsh willowherb can be found.
