Birgit Kowalczik

Birgit Kowalczik (born October 21, 1967 in Cologne ) is a German swimmer and Olympic participant.

The 1.80 m tall and 66 kg heavy athlete started for SV Rhenania Cologne .

She was able to place herself at German championships several times:

  • 200 m freestyle: 1986 3rd place
  • 400 m freestyle: 1982 and 1986 champion, 1987 runner-up, 1988 3rd place
  • 800 m freestyle: 1986 champion, 1987 3rd place, 1988 runner-up

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , she started the 400 and 800 m freestyle. In the 400 m freestyle she reached the final, where she finished 7th in 4: 16.33 minutes (for a medal she would have had to swim 4: 11.48 minutes). In the 800 m freestyle she was eliminated in 8: 53.34 minutes as 11th of the prelims.
