Birgit Munz

Birgit Munz (born November 14, 1954 in Wanne-Eickel ) is a German judge and Vice President of the Dresden Higher Regional Court . From 2007 to 2020 she was also President of the Constitutional Court of the Free State of Saxony .

Life

Birgit Munz studied law after graduating from high school. With effect from November 9, 1981, she entered the higher judicial service of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the area of ​​the Cologne Higher Regional Court. On October 8, 1985, she received a post at the Bonn Regional Court with the appointment of a judge at the Regional Court. She then worked there for over a decade and by way of secondment at the Cologne Higher Regional Court.

Effective September 1, 1997, Munz switched to the Saxon Justice division in order to take up a position as presiding judge at the Dresden Regional Court. On May 1, 2003, she was transferred to the Dresden Higher Regional Court as presiding judge at the Higher Regional Court. From January 2005 on, she was also chairwoman of the service court for judges. With effect from March 1, 2007, she succeeded Ulrich Hagenloch as Vice President at the Dresden Higher Regional Court, who had taken over the management of the Higher Regional Court in December 2006. In 2016, Munz chaired the 12th Civil Senate. On March 1, 2007, the CDU parliamentary group applied to the Saxon state parliament to elect Birgit Munz as President of the Saxon Constitutional Court. The election took place on March 14th in the state parliament. In the election, 89 MPs voted for Munz, 24 voted against them and 6 MPs abstained. With the election proposal of the Saxon state government on March 8, 2016, Birgit Munz was proposed for a second term of office as President of the Saxon Constitutional Court. In the following election, which took place on March 16, 2016 in the Saxon state parliament, Munz received 114 votes in favor, 4 against and one abstention from 119 valid votes cast.
