The Episcopal Seminar Melk on sale in the Wiener Straße 45 in the municipality of Melk in the district of Melk in Lower Austria . The former episcopal seminary belongs to the diocese of St. Pölten . The building with the chapel is a listed building .

Episcopal seminary

The episcopal seminary as a free-standing complex was built between 1903 and 1905 according to a design by the architect Heinrich Holzeland under the master builder Josef Schmalzhofer . From 1971 to 1972 an extension was made of exposed concrete according to the plans of master builder Johann Kräftner senior.

The hook-shaped three-storey building with a grid facade with late-historical decor and a slightly elevated central projection under a flat mansard roof has a baroque chapel roof turret with a bulging helmet. In the building there is a central staircase with a two-flight four-pillar staircase.

Chapel of St. John the Baptist on the second floor

The chapel is located on the second floor. The hall room with arched windows and stab cap barrel over pilasters with neo-baroque stucco shows the coat of arms of Bishop Johannes Rössler with the year 1903 above the entrance. The ornamental stained glass from the construction period with the Saints Catherine, Aloysius, Maria with Child, Thomas Aquinas and Cäcilia are from Ostermann and Hartwein from Munich. The altar niche shows the picture Baptism of Christ by Martin Johann Schmidt around 1750/52, formerly located in the parish church of Stein an der Donau. The stations of the cross are by the painter and mosaic artist Sepp Mayrhuber from 1959. The ceiling painting Resurrection of Christ with the signature Ritzer is from 1959. There is an organ.

Modern chapel on the third floor

The bent rectangular room with a stepped ceiling with a glass window wall has a wall painting with partly figurative execution of the crucifix, Mary with child, praying, Adam and Eve by Lydia Roppolt from 1972.
