Bishop of Coventry
The Bishop of Coventry is the Anglican Spiritual Head of the Diocese of Coventry . In the Middle Ages, the Bishop of Coventry was at times the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry .
The current diocese spans much of Warwickshire . The seat of the bishop is in Coventry in Coventry Cathedral of the Cathedral Church of Saint Michael . The Bishop's official residence is The Bishop's House in Coventry.
history
From 1102 to 1238, the former Benedictine Abbey and Cathedral of St Mary in Coventry was the seat of the early Bishops of Coventry, also known as the Bishop of Chester or Bishop of Lichfield. Until the dissolution of the monasteries , it was one of the seats of the Bishops of Coventry and Lichfield. The cathedral was destroyed in 1538 and the bishopric was thereafter alone in Lichfield . In 1837 Coventry was assigned to the Diocese of Worcester .

In the late 19th century there were two suffragan bishops from Coventry, both assigned to John Perowne as Bishop of Worcester.

Bishops of the modern diocese
The Diocese of Coventry was revived under King George V in 1918 when the parish church of Saint Michael was elevated to the status of cathedral. The cathedral was badly damaged by fire bombs from the German Air Force on the night of November 14, 1940 and is now a ruin memorial right next to the new cathedral, which was consecrated on May 25, 1962.
Christopher Cocksworth is the current Bishop of Coventry. He was ordained bishop on July 3, 2008 and inducted into office in Coventry on November 1, 2008. Previously, he was director of Ridley Hall , Cambridge.
