history

In February 1876, the committee established in 1875 commissioned the artist Heinrich Manger to erect a statue of the German Chancellor Prince Bismarck in Kissingen to make his Bismarck statue, which was made without commission for the world exhibition in Philadelphia, as a memorial. The permission of the Bavarian king was required for the erection of a monument to honor a still living personality. Thus, the Bavarian king wrote Ludwig II. , The monument is to "[...] can not be built there, where it was made an attempt against the Chancellor of nefarious Frevlerhand" but at the lower Saline in the park area at the Franconian Saale set up, so "At that point," said the king, "where he sought and found a cure in the complex of the saltworks bathed daily by the prince ." Spa guests made donations for the construction of the monument; in this way a large part of the construction costs of 7,800 marks could be covered.

The Bismarck memorial was unveiled on Sunday, April 29, 1877, at 10 o'clock , with detailed reports from the local Saale newspaper . During the festive dinner in the "Englischer Hof", during which master builder Manger, Hofrat Dr. Stöhr and Mayor Dr. Full honorary speeches to Kaiser Wilhelm I and Bismarck made, a thank you telegram from the Chancellor arrived. Nevertheless, despite his numerous spa stays in Hausen, Bismarck is said to never have looked at the memorial because, as he himself put it in a speech in the Reichstag on November 28, 1881, "the greatest embarrassment [...] with which one." Face I should pass my statue « . In addition, it bothers him "when I stand beside me as it were fossilized" .

The monument, which inspired the design of the Bismarck monument in Cologne , for example , had to be galvanized with a bronze skin shortly before Bismarck's centenary in 1915 for reasons of durability; This work was carried out by the Geislinger Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik WMF .
