The Bismarck statue in Munich.

The Bismarck Monument is a monumental statue in Munich that was erected in memory of the former German Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismarck . It was created in 1931 by the Munich sculptor Fritz Behn . The statue shows the statesman in a larger than life representation. In his right hand he holds a sword pointing to the ground. Behn modeled the design in the contemporary monumental style. It was carried out in Rochlitz porphyry by the master stonemason Rödl.

history

The creation of the monument is closely linked to the history of the Deutsches Museum . The industrialist Paul Reusch donated a statue for the museum's hall of honor , which was to stand in the tradition of the nationwide worship of Bismarck, which in Bavaria was less strong and delayed. The foundation became a political issue. Museum founder Oskar von Miller always advocated the stance that his house must remain apolitical and refused to erect the monument.

Finally, the statue was unveiled on September 11, 1931, without any celebration, on the entrance side of the not yet completed congress hall of the Deutsches Museum. The informal act was sharply criticized in the media. The day after the installation, the creative artist Behn laid a laurel wreath with mourning ribbon and the inscription In Mourning, In Shame on the monument . When public criticism of the monument's location continued, it was moved from Museum Island to its current location on Isarkai north of Boschbrücke in 1934 .
