history

The financial basis for a planned Bismarck monument was formed in 1897 by a donation from the Altenburg cigar manufacturer Edmund Schmidt (1845-1924) amounting to 20,000 marks . In 1908 the Herzog-Ernst -Wald was created, today's city forest. The architect and high-ranking Saxon-Altenburg building officer Alfred Wanckel (1855–1925) then designed an observation tower with a portico, which is modeled on the towers of the Altenburg city fortifications. The founder Edmund Schmidt accepted the design, the construction of which was estimated at 40,000 marks. The remainder was raised through donations until 1915. The foundation stone was laid on April 10, 1914, the inauguration on September 2, 1915. The Bismarck Tower with its viewing platform was open daily until 1930.

With the beginning of the Soviet military administration , the tower was renamed the Tower of Youth on November 10, 1948 . An open-air theater was built in front of the tower in 1960 . The FDJ administered the tower of the youth from 1974 to 1989, the area was regularly used as a holiday camp for the young pioneers . The Altenburger Land children's and youth center used the area as a recreation and leisure center until 2008.

The tower was first renovated in 1953/1954 and has been closed since 2009. In 2012 the Förderverein Bismarckturm Altenburg e. V. , who wants to renovate the tower and develop it for tourism.
