The Bismarck Tower in Bochum

The Bismarck Tower in Bochum is a monument in the Bochum City Park that was inaugurated in 1910 . Like numerous other towers of this time, it is dedicated to the Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck , who was nationally venerated as the architect who founded the Empire in 1871.

history

Flame bowl

In June 1908, the construction of a Bismarck tower was suggested by the former city councilor Otto Hünnebeck after Bismarck had been made an honorary citizen of Bochum in 1895 . Out of 650 submitted designs, the decision was made in favor of the design by the architect Albert Friebe from Breslau . The location chosen was a hill in the Bochum city park with a view over the city of Bochum to Gelsenkirchen and Essen . The cost of 100,000  marks for the 33 meter high structure was borne by donations. The building material is Ruhr sandstone from Dortmund-Hohensyburg.

The tower was inaugurated on October 16, 1910. The benzene- powered fire bowl attached to the tower was fired on Bismarck's birthday into the 1920s, removed in 1988 and is now to the right of the tower. After being closed for a long period from 1983, the tower was renovated and reopened on June 29, 2001.
