Bismarck Tower (Concepción)
The Bismarck Tower in Concepción , Chile, was built in 1921. It is located above the city on the 240 m high hill Cerro Caracol to the south. It is known locally as the “Mirador Alemán”.
history
The construction of the tower was suggested by the Federation of German Gymnastics Clubs in Chile (later the German-Chilean Gymnastics Association). The design of the tower made of granite stones comes from the architect Roderich von Stillfried from Valparaíso . He had a viewing platform.
The tower was inaugurated in spring 1921 on the occasion of the national gymnastics festival.
During the Chillán earthquake in 1939 , it was so badly affected that the upper floor had to be removed. The lower part with the hall of honor was preserved. It was again badly damaged in the Concepción earthquake in 1960 and the earthquake in Chile in 2010 .
