The 1960 Concepción earthquake was actually a series of three earthquakes on May 21 and 22, 1960. They were also a precursor to the Valdivia earthquake in 1960 .

The first earthquake on May 21st at 6:02 am UTC-4 . Its epicenter was located in Canete , Bío Bío Region , Chile , and its magnitude reached 8.1 or 8.3 M W and 7.3 or 7.5 M S . This 35-second earthquake destroyed a third of the buildings in the city of Concepción.
